I started therapy today...I also sat in university diner and started reading the introduction to the divine comedy...wondering which circle of hell i might currently inhabit...I felt sort of new york state of mind-y...like bill bourroughs/woody allen in an ed hopper.

Krishna and I then went to see another wellspring film...called Good Morning Night.

I loved it. It helped me with some of the questions I've been having about "democratic"capitalism vs socialism. Questions spawned by the last film Krishna and I saw: Good Night and Good Luck and it reminded me to read don delillo's new book.

Yesterday Socorro and I went to vote. That was good fun...all the switches and canidates...a vertable schmorgasbord(sp?) of parties...green...socialist workers...yay!

The day before that I took a trip to Jersey with Kumal. That was good fun. Thanks, Kumal.

So...ugh...Purple rain just ended...I guess I'll take a shower and do some laundry.

Thirteendays of Reflection: Day (6)?

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

Ok...I'm up to 1996. Keeping in mind that this blog:

http://www.artexaminglife.blogspot.com/

was created as a makeshift portfolio for my art/life professors to view and recommend (or not recommend) me as a grad school candidate...I'm a little embarrassed at how personal it is and slightly sheepish in thinking that it does not go far enough in explaining the horrible mistakes and consequences...these past thirteen years (and these past 36 years for that matter)...This is the point at which religion starts to make sense.

You know, the absolution from sin and responsibility in exchange for confession and the "God still loves all us children...even the 36 year old ones."

Be aware, anyone who is glad I have let go and let God, faith is a fleeting thing for me. Moments from now I will be thinking what a manipulative and mis-used deception the "Great One" is...but for now I take comfort in the belief that we are perfect...just as god made us (U.S.?).

Don't...don't...don't...let's forget:

Last night Krishna and I went to a free screening of this movie about CBS, Edward R. Murrow, and Senator Joseph McCarthy's hunt for communists. Krishna wasn't as impressed. I really loved it...the careful b & w cinamatography...the gravity of the subject...If nothing else it sparked a good three of four hours of discussion about socialism/communism/capitalism/Civil Rights.

Thanks, George Cluny for making this film.

I've started putting together an application for graduate school...I am applying to the nearest school, City College...to the College of Fine Art. This has inspired me to get in touch with my art professors and professoras from long, long ago...begging for rememberence and recommendations...it also inspired this blog/On-line review of my life in sketchbooks these past thirteen years. As with most projects, this is taking longer than I anticipated:

Grope Magazine

I was working with Habitat in AL a few years back and thinking about what to do next...I thought I might travel around the world looking at cities and buildings and the way people moved through cities and write about the experience in the form of a 'zine...I came up with the name Grope. The word seemed an accurate description of the way in which I wanted to travel...Somewhat blindly, without relying on guide books. Instead I wanted to put faith in my other senses to listen and feel my way around. When I ended up taking a somewhat fixed position in New York the travel/architecture/culture magazine idea ("like National Geographic but different and for Grrls") definately went to the back burner. I am now making small attempts at reincarnating it as a blog: http://www.gropemagazine.blogspot.com/

Dan Sutherland was one of my drawing teachers that last year at UT...on one of the last days of his class he brought in several full sheets of plywood for us to paint...collaboratively...many people had made small graffitti-like pictures...I wanted to give it some overall structure by going over things (wet and dry) with water and a paintbrush...in grid-like lines...one of my classmates asked, "Is this a control thing."

living in a bubble

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this.
Early last saturday morning Kumal and Brian and I greeted the sun from Jesse and Arum's rooftop. It was one of those unexpected great moments. The kind of perfect moment Spaulding Gray must have been talking about in Swimming to Cambodia.

I had no idea there was a hurricane named Katrina. No sense of impending disaster. When I saw the picture on the front page of the paper late sunday afternoon, i was amazed. everything under water. everything. unbelieveable...like the pictures from abu grabe...too amazing to be real...like the falling towers...and still somehow I shook my head in disbelief and went back to work and pretty much forgot about it until I saw the picture of the body floating in the water a few days later. Is this really happening here? in the us? But still shook my head and went back to shelving books and pretty much forgot about it.

Yesterday there were protesters in Union Square. Why isn't there more disaster relief? Why were the levees left in such condition? Good questions. The general consensus in Union Square aka Camp Casey seemed (to borrow a phrase from the energy blog) to be that the bush administration was out to "prove that government doesn't work while simultanously robbing tax payers blind."

Today I passed on going to the big parade in Brooklyn in favor of organizing the file cabinet at the community garden. There was something good about seeing those papers. Calanders for planting...bylaws...optimistic mission statements...maybe there's still time to plant kale.
