As horses became larger, and as the feeling began to include high-energy grains, the need for greater steering and breaking mechanisms became apparent, and so the snaffle bit was "jointed" in the middle to squeeze the face, an action that was some times intensified with rings or cheeks added to the ends of the mouthpiece.
