School of the Future, Saint Columbia

Steve and Fred Weber (who I met at the raw vegan potluck) invited me to their church at School of the Future. Later it moved to St. Columbia on the Westside.

Times Up, Webers, Schnieder and ASL

In February, Times Up: An Environmental Organization hosted a Valentine fundraiser I volunteered to help with. On the 14th, on my way to Housing Court, ASL called and said Michael had said that he did not want me in his class. They said that he said I was dangerous.

2012, 301, 215, 23rd, and 24K

January 2012 I was living on the west side. I went to a film festival at Columbia. One of the films was about animal rights and being vegan. That Sunday, Joe from Redeemer invited me to a Raw Vegan Potluck dinner.

Oh What A Night...

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this
ok...2012...almost half way...sitting here at the library...something seems to be up. Some kind of renovation or shift...many of the books are gone.

Myself...I have been doing good. I may soon have positive cash flow. I love where I live. I have been hanging out with Christians, thinking about 1963...becoming purple, obsequious (sp?) and clairvoyant. Loving my iPhone....and attempting to look at and write about art...mostly so far just looking.

Last week I was at PS1, looking at the Brooklyn Rail. There was an article about Abbie Hoffman with a photo of a young (30's-ish?) Hoffman who looked much like Michael from ASL-so much so, that I started to wonder if he was Michael from ASL. Strangely enough, Stephen Weber said the guest speaker at his church that night was named Michael Pellettieri. The pictures of the older Hoffman don't look like Michael at all. I e-mailed Mitch to see if he was still wanting to work on a film about Hoffman. He wrote back right away and said it was a graphic novel, but yes he was.

Last Thursday, Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing held an all night vigil/rally/press conference at City Hall. After meeting Stephen's Michael (who wasn't the same Michael, but sounded like a famous radio personality) I walked down to Union Square sat for a minute with the chess players then walked with a guy named (Fernando?), who happened to look like a shorter, darker Marc Greenberg down to City Hall. We arrived around midnight. The Park was closed. Maybe ten (demonstrators?) were camped out in front. Marc Greenberg among them.

So now this week I am thinking about Hoffman, Homelessness and Housing, 1963, heat (and the absence there of).

Summer, shelter, stays and storms

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

Mid-September and it's getting cold...On August 24th a city Marshall came to my door and informed me I would have to leave the apartment, but my stuff would be held there for 30 days. At the appeals court, someone suggested asking for a stay of the re-letting of the apartment. After two weeks of staying up all night watching movies, riding trains and sitting in diners...I found my way to a women's shelter in the Bronx with help from and thanks to Kristen from Scott Stinger's Office. The shelter is a city intake center and run by the Salvation Army. It's in an old Armory. The people there are mostly nice. However, my case-worker there, Ms. Tavaris, hasn't been very helpful. I have a very limited time to get help with the stay. Otherwise, I will have to move my things to a storage place.

A friend of a friend from 4th U has a lead on an apartment that might work out. Still looking for good roommates to share housing either at 545 or somewhere else. Still feeling righteous about fighting the negligent, harassing, over-charging owners of the 545 W 146th Street. HPD is taking them to court...so that is an optimistic sign. Next court date, September 22...11th floor....111 Center Street.

I am feeling alternately good and awful as I am still trying to get over this very bad cold that has moved from my throat to my sinus to my chest then back to my sinus while still kind of hanging out in my chest. Then kind of causing some sort of flu like thing in my head. THis while I am very close to being evicted and needing to take the train downtown to see about making an appeal to Judge Halprin's Marrch 7th Decision that I owe my negligent LL $73, 000.

Oh and the kitchen ceiling collapsed. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Electricity!

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

This is the day after Martin Luther King Day. It's raining outside. I just returned from the gym thinking I should get the laundry together. Then got excited about having a working computer, electricity (con-edison stopped trying to charge me for my ex-roommate's bill) and internet access...so I am cleaning all the old photos from the Nikon Coolpix and putting them on this apple laptop lent by Steven Chiu. I hope he doesn't mind.

In other news, I have combined my roommate search with the search for Art Collective directors. This Is how I met Ana from the Center for Book Arts who has been here for a little over a week and has helped enormously with the rehab.

Sitting here on the futon in the dining room,
listening to the kitchen sink making kind of
pretty, dripping, gurggling, water sounds and
getting ready to head out into the street,
past the McDonalds, and down into the train which
(god willing) will carry me to the gym.

Happy New Year!

May peace and happiness be with you

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

Thursday--recycling day...here in the library checking e-mail and charging devices. Living sans electricity at the apartment since August. Maybe I will have it turned back on in 2011. Now I kind of like the 1800's life style...candles, ambient sounds. I am working on intaglio printmaking. THis seems to go with with the no electricity theme. Life is not bad except that I feel I am being radiated by some kind of thing from above. I have no idea what it is. At first I thought it was x-rays or micro waves or sonar or something from some kind of star wars weaponry. It seems to have different settings. This has been going on for some time. I haven't said much about this to anyone. It sounds kind of crazy.

In other news, After five free days at Crunch, I am convinced that I need a gym in my life. I am looking at different ones to compare prices and amenities/services. Crunch was really good--especially the dance and yoga classes and the locker rooms. I looked at Manhattan Plaza. It was okay, but had a funny smell and less nice showers. The lockers rooms at the Metro Parks Rec Center were better even. I am planning to go back next week to test it out.

One in Williamsburg, next to the Time's Up space, called Soma was so-so. I didn't see the locker rooms there. On the really high end there is Equinox which looks like it might be really nice. I don't know if it fits my shoestring image/budget.

No other really big news. Life is good (for the most part.)

This week I am working on drawings and reading books about printmaking (when not sleeping, eating, making little time lapse film studies or going to the LatinBeat Film Festival at Lincoln Center.)

Best Film so far is the Chilean film called Optical Illusions:

“Optical Illusions” (Ilusiones Opticas)
Cristian Jimenez, Chile, 2010; 105m NY Premiere
Juan is able to see again after a lifetime of blindness, but this only seems to have made his life worse. Rafa, a security guard at the local mall falls in love with a wealthy shoplifting customer and Manuela, his sister, works in a dreary office but dreams of breast implants to improve her life. Jimenez’s delightful satirical comedy turns inside out the perceptions of a parade of quirky but endearing interconnected characters, poking fun at our own assumptions of reality.

I can't seem to find much about this film on you tube.

Earl, ASL, Art Co-op

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

I set my alarm for 5AM to get up and go running before it got too hot. This did not happen. Instead, I woke up at ten with an urge to go out to Queens to buy wood to strech canvas. This did not happen either. Instead I got out of the crowded 1 train at 110 to get a cold drink and watched some firemen doing something with a hydrant, then rode down to the art student's league and was thinking about printmaking with Micheal Pelletieri when my mom called me to say there was a storm headed this way and it's name is Earl. From there I walked to MOMA, sat in the cafe and made lists of people I should write to: Noam Chomsky, Greg Williams, Marshall Berman, Ghislaine Hermanuz, Marta Gutman, Bags for the People, Modern Painter, Grace Knowlton, Yvonne Rainer, Scherezade, Megan FOster, Sylvia Netzer, Tom Willome, Dan Southerland, Steve KNoll, Tom Beach, Linda Montano, Alvin Osteroff, Juli Burden, Beth CCameron, Scott Hinson, Bill Lundberg, Susan Whyne, Maggie Bogdanovich, Lisa Gonzales...the list goes on. I ran through the painting exhibit and the women photographer's and on the way out made a short film in the garden. Then I jumped on a bus to the library where (after stopping for hamburgers) I saw a nice slideshow/talk about architectural walking tours and MAS. Yesterday I met with Steve Chiu about starting an art co-op/collective of some sort. Next Meeting is September 15th if you are inclined to sit on the board. Now home to work on a portfolio of some sort!

RE: cycling day

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this Thursday...recycling day...here at CCNY charging various devices and uploading pictures from the new (refurbished) Nikon 700 found in the Used department at B&H. It is unique in that it has these great time-lapse and stop motion features which I am loving very much. I miss my Canon, but this Nikon is VERY sweet. I brought it with me to Albany Tuesday when I went with Metropolital Council on Housing to urge NY State Senators to support Real Rent Reform. Sad about the loss of the rubber piece off one of the legs of my grandfather's tripod. If found please return.

I saw Liz Kruger...sponsor of Real Rent Reform bills...My very handsome senator, Bill Perkins...there was a bit of a (mal entendu?)skermish in which Pedro (Escobar?) was yelling, "Bull! Bull! Bull!" all in all a very fun trip. NY Senate is gorgeous...well worth the trip for that alone. I heart democracy.

I am contemplating bicycles.

Court Skort

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

After much running around, I have acquired two new, not in-expensive skorts. One is black and made by ADIDAS. The other is blue and made by Nike. I am very happy with these as they are cool and comfortable and not too shabby. I got them at the running store. I am afraid I am now addicted to expensive running attire. I rationalize this addiction by hoping I will be encouraged to exercise more and eat less.

Today was my housing court date with 545 W 146th ST. CORP. The new attorney for 545 (Joel Charlston) turns out to be fairly nice and reasonable. We scheduled a time (Friday noonish) for him to come by and photograph 545 W 146th Street in all it's glory as he had not yet seen the building. We agreed to adjourn the case (73150)until August 25th, 2010. I feel pretty good about this.

My list of things to do today looks like this:

Look for examples of community garden projects

Laundry

Get letter from post office

Eat lentil soup

Today CAN (City Agriculture Network)
and St. Luke's Episcopal Garden will meet to brainstorm

This past month has been a bit of a blur. Much time has been given to waking dreams, questions about the SEC, eating, and playing with my replacement tv/computer...the ipod. I curse the adobe lego symbol that means that the content not ipod friendly. Also the content for the ipod is less and/or different than a regular computer might get. I still can't really believe my cousin Scott has died in a car accident. I prefer to think he has changed his name and joined the CIA or some other clansdetine operation.

Today I rode out to PS1 then back to SIBL (Science and Business Library)after talking to Michelle about hydro-fracking and gardening. Now I am off to buy sweatpants. I hope to spend a good part of July on Ohio with my grandmothers and sundry relations.

Sitting here listening to WNYC drinking Bernardo’s espresso black with Bernardo’s honey, thinking about watching another episode of the Mighty Boosh and/or Nevermind The Buzzcocks and/or the Daily Show. Is this a good use of my time here in NYC? Shouldn’t I be going to museums and running in the park? Belly dancing? Bike riding? Doing laundry? Getting acquainted with the neighbors? Working on and art project? Getting rid of clutter? Filing things? Looking for a job?

No. I am staying inside, drinking coffee, listening to the radio, singing “This Little Light”, reading Schapiro’s Words and Pictures, and watching television on the computer.
Last night I found Todd Brooks on You Tube. It seemed like it could be slightly live.

Two Books From the Piles and Piles of Books that have Collected Here on and Around the Dining Room Futon

what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this what is this

We all know that the best kind of book to own is a refrence book. This is a very excellent reference book: Bill Risebero's Modern Architecture and Design: An Alternative History. The edition I have is a First MIT Press Edition published in 1983. The inside flap of the dust jacket has a quote from Sir James Richards which reads, "A really brave attempt to put into historical perspective the present confused and conflicting opinions about modern architecture and design." The book is divided into eight sections (1. The modern Prometheus: The industrial revolution; 2. Contrasts: Britian and America in the late 19th Century; 3. The philosophy of right: Continental Europe in the early 19th century; 4. How we live and how we might live; Europe in the mid-19th century; 5. The will to power: Europe and America in the late 19th century; 6. The light that failed: The turn of the century; 7. The state and revolution: The First World War and after; 8. Brave new world: The Second World War and after). The best thing about this book: the numerous b&w illustrations. What may make the history seem confused and conflicted is the effort to present an alternative history that is still Eurocentric.

Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove's voices of a peoples's history OF THE UNITED STATES is another great reference book picked up at a free event at Cooper Union a few years ago. Published in 2004 by Seven Stories Press, Voices consists of hundreds of historic essays, letters and speaches organized into 24 groupings: 1) Columbus and Las Casas 2) The First Slaves 3) Servitude and rebellion 4) Preparing the Revolution 5) Half a Revolution 6) The Early Women's Movement 7) Indian Removal 8) The War in Mexico 9) Slavery and Defiance 10) Civil War and Class Conflict 11) Strikers and Populists in the Guilded Age 12) The Expansion of the Empire 13) Socialists and Wobblies 14) Protesting the First World War 15) From the Jazz Age to the Uprisings of the 1930's 16) WWII and McCarthyism 17) The Black Upsurge Against Racial Segregation 18) Vietnam and Beyond: The Historic Resist 19) Women, Gays and Other Voices of Resistance 20) Losing Control in the 70's 21)The Carter-Reagan-Bush Consensus 22)Panama, The 1991 Gulf War and the War at Home 23) Challenging Bill Clinton 24)Bush II and the "War on Terror"
